About the Films
The Brides (Dir: Szomjas György | HU | 37' | 1970)During the 1960s and 1970s, Italian tourists became a sensation among local girls in Budapest. To them, young Italian men symbolized the West and prosperity. In socialist Hungary, records were sourced from Yugoslavia, chocolate from Belgium, and sometimes husbands from Italy. The girls, speaking with shocking candor for their age, recount their adventures in exchange for branded goods, a ride in a Mercedes, or an Alfa Romeo, as well as the fickle nature of Italian men. The Brides is a defining work of this documentary style and an ironic portrayal of young people's yearning for the West.
Labudović Dossier: Ciné-Guerrillas (Dir: Mila Turajlić | RS, FR, ME, HR, QA | 94' | 2022)Ciné-Guerrillas delves into the media battle waged during the Algerian War of Independence, where cinema was mobilized as a weapon of political struggle against colonialism. This feature-length documentary takes us through the archives of Stevan Labudović, the personal cameraman of Yugoslav President Tito.
Between Revolutions (Dir: Vlad Petri | RU, HR, QA, IRN | 69' | 2023)Zahra and Maria met at university in Bucharest in the 1970s. When hopes for political change lead Zahra back home to Iran, the two are forced to part ways. Throughout the following decade, until the Romanian Revolution of 1989, letters were their only form of communication. Divided by two revolutions, their correspondence reveals women striving to be heard, countries moving in different directions, and two souls united in longing for one another.
Labudović Dossier: Non-Aligned (Dir: Mila Turajlić | RS, FR, HR, ME, QA | 100' | 2022)This feature-length documentary takes us through the archives of Stevan Labudović, Tito's personal cameraman. The film traces the birth of the Non-Aligned Movement, offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into an era of personalities, politics, and promises that defined the Third World. It explores how cinema helped shape the global project of political emancipation.
The film marathon is organized in collaboration with Kinedok Croatia and Restart Label, with financial support from the City of Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik Tourist Board, and Croatian National Tourist Board.
