What if a fountain could be much more than a place to get water?

Across Europe, public fountains and springs are being reimagined as places of heritage, sustainability, education and community life. They can help reduce single-use plastic, preserve local stories, provide free drinking water and bring people together.

The new THE SOURCE Handbook brings together 12 inspiring practices from across Europe, showing how cities and communities are giving new meaning to their water heritage.

Discover how citizens in Andalusia helped map more than 12,000 springs and fountains, how Paris combines historic fountains with a citywide public drinking-water network, and how Sarajevo’s MAP4WATER initiative turned the city’s fountains into a tool for community action.

Dubrovnik is represented through several examples, including the Vodek drinking fountains on the Lapad promenade, chosen by residents through participatory budgeting, the nearly six-century-old Great Onofrio’s Fountain, and Maritimo Recycling, which transforms plastic collected from water into new design objects.

Designed as a practical resource for educators, museums, cultural organisations, local authorities and communities, the Handbook shows that meaningful ideas do not always require huge budgets. Sometimes the best place to start is simply the fountain that is already there.
