The introductory section of the museum presents the origins and development of the communist movement, the creation of Yugoslavia – a state of the South Slavs – and the activities of Yugoslav communists in the interwar period.
This part of the exhibition takes visitors back to the turbulent 1940s – a period of the largest global conflict, the consequences of which are still felt today. During these years, a new socialist Yugoslavia was established under the leadership of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia.
What did Yugoslav society shaped by new socialist values look like? What made Yugoslavia unique among other European countries? What was everyday life like for its citizens? The central part of the exhibition provides answers to these questions.
Dubrovnik was a unique city in a unique country. Discover its cultural, scientific, and tourist significance, and learn why it was known as an “open palm under the stars.”
The final two decades of socialist Yugoslavia were marked by reform efforts and a growing divide between its republics. This section follows the period from the reform movements of the 1970s, through the deaths of key political figures, to the deep economic and political crisis that led to the violent breakup of the state in 1991.
Numbers and documents often tell one story, while memories tell another. This most personal part of the exhibition presents photographs and stories from donors across Croatia, reflecting both everyday life and less common experiences of living under socialism.
