As part of the project THE SOURCE – Guardians of the Source, a mapping of Dubrovnik’s
historical fountains and water taps was carried out. For centuries, water shaped the city’s
everyday life – from the aqueduct that carried it from the source to the city walls, to the
fountains that served as places of supply, gathering, and daily encounters. The best known
among them, the Large and Small Onofrio’s Fountains, remain among the city’s recognisable
symbols.
The mapping recorded the locations, condition, and historical context of individual fountains,
creating a foundation for further research and the reinterpretation of shared European heritage
connected to water. The material gathered links the historical relationship with water to today’s
reflection on sustainability and resource preservation, which lies at the heart of the project.
The results of the mapping and the next steps will be presented on these pages as the project
progresses.
